GoingStick

Electro-mechanical device for scientifically measuring the firmness of the sports surface

A global industry standard

Since March 2007 GoingStick readings have been published for around 1,100 Turf race meetings each year under the British Horseracing Authority Rules of Racing and are fast becoming a global industry standard for the scientific assessment of ground conditions.

International racing authorities and major racing festivals to have adopted use of the GoingStick to date include France Galop, Deutscher Galopp, Dubai Racing Club, Saudi Cup, Breeders’ Cup,  Woodbine Ent. Group, Hong Kong Jockey Club, The Australian Turf Club, Racing Victoria, Racing Queensland and New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing meaning some 2,500 turf race meetings a year are covered across the globe.

In Autumn 2023 Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) became the latest international regulatory body, and the first in the greyhound racing industry, to mandate use of a specially adapted version of the TurfTrax GoingStick at all its 13 tracks in south-eastern Australia following successful trials of the device at Cranbourne and home of the Group 1 Melbourne Cup, Sandown Park.

While the way in which the racing surface is subjectively described differs historically in each racing jurisdiction, the GoingStick has established an internationally recognised scientific data collection method to instil confidence and provides the benchmark for unified global track management standards.

“The TurfTrax GoingStick is going to be a great way for us to communicate with trainers on this side of the pond exactly what the going is, and we will have the maps to prove it. It’s an analytical way to view it rather than just saying it’s good ground.”

Joshua Christian, Vice-President of Racing speaking in Newmarket ahead of the 2020 Breeders’ Cup.
